He was recommended to me from my hair stylist, and I went right over to the Animal Medical Clinic of Gulf Gate, here in Sarasota, Florida, to make an appointment with Dr Nick for our sickly cat, Matthew. This wonderful man, Dr. Nick, took 45 minutes for a consultation and examined Matthew throughly. We thought that Matthew might need surgery but Dr. Nick made him perfectly well as long as Matthew takes his meds everyday! Dr. Nick was a blessing in disguise! We liked him so much that we have been taking all of our cats to his clinic. He didn't get to meet all of our cats, but he met a few of them except for 3 of our girl cats, Misty, Molly, and Cindy. He was so good with the other cats, and helped us with Timothy with his diabetes, until Timmy's passing due to his kidneys failing. We have been so happy to have been a part his clinic for our cats as the staff has been so kind and helpful for us and so friendly and so devoted to their wonderful work for us with our babies. Dr. Nick with his intellectual expertise and above average knowledge was fantastic and if he didn't know something, he would look it up for us, during the cats' examination. What a difference! Matthew has a new lease on life and a great, great vet! Dr. Nick was so very very gentle and wonderful with our kitties. So personable toward us and would shake our hand when he would come into the exam room.We shall never forget him. Dr. Nick Here are pictures of our kitties that adopted us! They are the ones that Dr. Nick treated for us and kept them healthy! This is Timothy Dr. Nick really worked with Tim with Tim's diabetes. It was hard to get Tim settled in the right place with his insulin, but Dr. Nick did it.. until Tim's passing due to his kidneys failure. Dr. Lantry had to help Tim to the RB, and she kissed him. Thank you Dr. Lantry for putting Tim out of his misery. Dr. Lantry Our Matthew Here is our boy that Dr. Nick treated for his healthy life due to his illness that he has had most of his life. As long as Matthew takes his medication, he still has his life in a class by itself... due to Dr. Nick's wonderful care and compassion. Our Andy Andy is our cat with the sometimes funny attitude toward life. He was treated also by our Dr. Nick too. Longtime Sarasota veterinarian Nick Neutzling died Thursday of injuries from being struck by a car while crossing a street with his young son on Nov. 2. Related Links: Location veterinarian was hit by car map | Graphics "Dr. Nick," as he was known, often worked nights and weekends. No only did he run the business and minister to clients' animals, he also treated injured wildlife.
Neutzling took even more comfort in his work after his wife of 35 years, Rosemary, died last year at age 57 after a brief battle with cancer.
So it was no surprise when Neutzling, after dropping his car off at a nearby auto shop on a recent Sunday, decided to walk over to the clinic to check on some recuperating animals. With him was his 6-year-old son, Tanner.
Neutzling never made it to the clinic.
He was struck by a car while crossing the street just two blocks from his office.
Neutzling, 60, in a coma since the Nov. 2 accident, died Thursday from his injuries.
Tanner was uninjured and will now be raised by relatives.
At the animal clinic Saturday, clients were in mourning.
"The veterinary community has lost a real valued member," said Robin Conti, who said she has not been able to wear her contact lenses for the past three days because her eyes keep welling up with tears.
Conti and other clients praised the compassion Neutzling and his staff showed, both to animals and to their sometimes distraught owners.
"This isn't an office, it's like a family," said client Cathie Fleming.
Neutzling had dropped off his car at his mechanic's shop near the animal clinic and was walking back to his office when he was struck in a crosswalk on Gateway Avenue.
Driver Owen Helwig, 75, of Sarasota, was making a right turn on a red light onto Stickney Point Road from Gateway Avenue when he struck Neutzling, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Helwig was charged with failing to yield the right of way to a pedestrian.
Neutzling's love of animals extended beyond his clinic. He cared for two dogs, two cats, three horses, a pony and several deer at his rural home in eastern Sarasota County.
Born and raised in Ohio, Neutzling graduated from Ohio State in 1974 and practiced briefly in Athens, Ohio, before relocating to Sarasota in 1975. That year he began working at the clinic as an associate, and later acquired the practice.
"He was extremely dedicated and poured his whole life into the animals he treated," said co-worker and fellow veterinarian Stephanie Lantry. "The impact of his loss will be felt for a long time to come."
In addition to his son, Neutzling is survived by four sisters: Mary Wippel, Bonnie Smith, Dorothy "Dot" Neutzling and Stella Snyder, and two brothers, Patrick and Michael, all originally from Pomeroy, Ohio; his father-in-law, George E. Morris; a brother-in-law, George V. Morris, and several extended family members.
